What began as a jokingly formulated season goal became reality in 2025: the double-handed team of Nikolai P. Burkart and Florian Steidle has won the ORC1 Offshore Championship on Lake Constance – fulfilling a long-held dream.
“Our goal was actually meant more as a joke than a serious one,” recalls boat owner and helmsman Nikolai P. Burkart with a smile. But after the first chuckle, the duo accepted the challenge – and prepared meticulously.
The foundation for their success was the detailed and passionate work of SAY shipyard owner Sven Akermann, who brought the now 20-year-old SAY 10 ICE into top form with finely tuned adjustments.
With passion and precision to success
Burkart and Steidle competed in all the long-distance classics of 2025 in a double-handed configuration – only for the Rund Um and the Altnau Day and Night Regatta was the crew expanded by two sailors. “I fell head over heels in love with this boat about 15 years ago,” says Burkart. “It was love at first sight – and that passion still carries us across the lake today.”
Florian Steidle, who combines the roles of onboard crew, coordinator, and shore crew in one person, also gives his all – not only on the water: “I’m double-handed in my private life, too,” he says with a wink. “Our project’s name is Matteo, he’s now one year old – and my partner Alexandra gives me the freedom to pursue this. I’m endlessly grateful to her for that.”
Triple triumph at the end of the season
At the award ceremony came the crowning moment of an exceptional season: the team not only won the overall Doublehand class but also the overall ORC1 ranking. But it got even better – Dietmar Lenz, President of the Regatta Association of Lake Constance, had one more surprise: he presented the challenge trophy “International Lake Constance Champion of all ORC Classes.”
A moment that stirred great emotions among friends, family, and the entire crew.
Thanks to the team behind the success
Special thanks go to the many helping hands around the project: Martin Härer, Michael Zittlau, Dominic Fritze, Frederick and Henrik Schaal, Dennis Nunes, Eckhard Kaller, and Alexander Gaiser.
Without this strong team in the background, this success would not have been possible. Proof that passion, precision, and team spirit are the best winds for great achievements.
